Recession or no recession, I carry on purchasing my weekly dosis of aural pleasure. And here it is condensed in 70 min of pure dancefloor bliss. Last year was re-edit time. This one, it can be said by now that deep house is back with a disco touch all over. Sluggish, slower and more sophisticated than in the late 90s. It is all about recycling!

The death of Michael Jackson has caught everybody off guard. It is very sad to see a music genius of his stature go away all of a sudden. Anyhow, we have been left with a legacy of masterpieces behind by the stellar and controversial ‘king of pop’. time to re-edit his entire back-catalogue?

This mix is dedicated to Michael… via the revenge.

Possibly more ‘housy’ than it should be, but… many good tracks released recently that need to be aired. Pay attention to that late 90s house feel Tensnake displays in his last 12″. Dancers will love this one. Ewan Pearson is back with his excellent production skills, this time helping Junior Boys to make another gem of an album. With ‘hazel’ as the standout track and getting the discoid treatment via Berlin. Any record by Cobblestone Jazz is aural glory. At the end of the mix you have ‘traffic jam’ and the highly sought after ‘intrusion remix’ for the Firecracker label underground hit ‘miles away’. 

The ever present Prins Thomas is included. The remix here is ‘before i started to dance’ by Quixote on Versatile released last year. I know it does not go that well with the mix but it is just too good to leave it out. And those ‘flower power’ guitars  and sparkling colorful synths in the middle section of the track are sublime!

jonny greenwood – prospectors arrive

the chosen song for this week has been lifted from the ‘there will be blood’ soundtrack composed by jonny greenwood, part of radiohead. this composition mirrors the sombre, dark and solemn figure of henry plainview; interpreted by a superb daniel day-lewis, who blissfully encapsulates the best and worse parts of plainview’s charachter: dedication, discipline, commitment, selfishness, greediness, competition and the destruction of both his enemies and himself.

fabulous soundtrack and film.

two years old, this is a record that works perfectly for any party and any crowd. with its eastern vibes and ‘balearic’ melodies will transp0rt you to a sunny, idyllic beach where you will not resist dancing to this masterpiece. possibly best rub ‘n’ tug mix ever. it has not left my record box since i bought it. for a reason.

FROM JAZZ FUNK & FUSION TO ACID JAZZ: THE HISTORY OF THE UK JAZZ DANCE SCENE

i have  couple of superb snowboy tracks on the san fran latin jazz and dance music label ubiquity. what a surprise today to read that he has become a writer. man of many faces!

here are some words about who he his and what he has done:

Mark Cotgrove aka Snowboy, is a son of Southend-On-Sea… a jazz-man, a soulboy who dresses like a rockabilly – quiff – biker boots ‘n’all - who maintains a global reputation as an Afro Cuban percussionist, bandleader, DJ, club promoter, music critic and journalist.

Snowboy has spent the last 10 years putting together this amazing 300 page book which, through 200+ interviews, documents the UK’s unique Jazz Dance scene from the seventies to the mid-nineties. This is a labour of  love dedicated to the dancers and the DJs he’s grown up alongside on the dancefloors of clubs all over the UK – like The Goldmine, Electric Ballroom, Berlin and The Wag.

As a musician, Snowboy was pivotal in the UK Acid Jazz scene. He has released 15 albums and 20 singles in a career that spans over 25 years and has taken him and his authentic Afro-Cuban sound to concert stages all over the world.

A World-leader in Afro-related History, Music and Art. Professor Robert Farris Thompson of Yale University states in his ‘Foreward’ to the book:

“Shakespeare himself, who once poked fun at over-elegance in favour of direct Anglo Saxon, would have been proud of this lad. In sum, the cultural significance of the text is immense. It is a classic in the field of dance and music.”

caetano veloso – alfomega

originally released in 1969, makes this gem forty years old, but it sounds as fresh as anything released today. this is one of the many highlights of brazilian musician caetano veloso. set against a background of state repression in brazil, this was (and still is) pure escapist party tune. great instrumental arrangement, noisy drums, raging and melodic vocals. powerful stuff indeed!

damian lazarus – smoke the monster out

‘moment’, Lazarus first single, was released early in april and what a taster. it was like one of those kinder surprise chocolate eggs. as you unwrap it, you get more and more excited. starts with a beautiful voice, almost in a classic music vein, and half way through a rampant bassline enters the structure to break havoc both in the dancefloor and your personal stereo. of course, there is more than that, but that is what my mind has kept.

damian lazarus releases his first album. fragile, beautiful and melodic. crosstown rebels captain shows his mastery in the studio. ‘lullabies’, the song here,  is one of the highlights of ‘smoke the monster out’ released via german label get physical. give it a listen, press play on the link above.
